Summer Update

I have not posted in a while and I am itching for a scanner so I can get some more of my work uploaded but in the meantime, Here is a update of a character modal sheet I did for lil Red Riding hood I did back in March and another piece I recently did for a scketchbook I'm working on that will be called Creative Flush so keep an Eye out. Practicing more and more on 2d animation. As far as my summer goes it is pretty exciting, I am in California interning with Nickelodeon on the Fairly Odd Parents Department so I am pretty excited about that and I am meeting alot of interesting people and learning alot. Here are character designs I was working on this quarter in my Concept Development for Animation class. I learned so much from my professor Keith Ingham about camera movements and how to keep the continuity of a film linear as well as how to make it non-linear and how it can be effective in storytelling. Overall, taking this class was great for me because I got to learn from my animation major peers during our crit sessions and boy were they great!! Anyways here are the character designs and I'm gonna try to post up my animatic! Take care!

Here is an update of some of the work I've been doing in my classes so far. Two vehicle designs, one organic and one technological. The first vehicle is a beast of burden as they are called and the techno is a hover search vehicle. I am definitely learning alot about concept design and cant wait to take a second swing at these projects later in the quarter.

New Quarter, New Concepts, More Work!

This is a new project for the quarter for my concept illustration class. Basically, the assignement is to create two combatants in any arena/ playing field, so w/ that said, my two characters are musicians: a punk guitarist, and tribal bagpipe player. These are a few of the better silhouettes I did for both combatants. The final selects are above for each w/ their value studies. I will post the color tests later.

Re worked the image a lil more in photoshop. I blurred the background buildings and the fire in the foreground to pop the robot out alil more. I guess it helped?

Here is the latest class assignment I've done, so far, w/ only a week left of summer school I'm feelin the toll this quarter's had on me. Enjoyed this project and had alot of fun. I learned about how 2 use smart objects but also ran into a few snags while working on this file between both illustrator and exportin 2 photoshop, but all in all a great learnin process for me. As for why the robots shootin rainbow beams and rainbow eyes...im bringin... rainbows back? b e z

Real fun project had a blast and learnt alot about Illustrator cs3. I messed up my file and lost the texture on the robot thingy but was able to translate it to the shirt version. Good learning process and something I will definitly revisit in the future.

This is the final concept I will post the final concepts later on When I get to a bigger scanner.

I started to lean towards this mechanic type character and the top thumbnail but my teacher opted for the bottom thumbnail as it seemed more action oriented and not as static.

This is for my Electronic Vector Illustation Class. Some Thumbs for our latest project to create a package design that applies to skateboard, hat and shirt. The project is pretty open as far as what we can do so I'm gonna incorporate a steam punk theme for my idea if you dont know what that is ill leave that to my good friend wiki to explain.

I was a Summer Seminar Assistant here at SCAD for about 4 weeks, working an internship at Mocha Lifestyle As well as taking a vector Illustration Class. Finally got the finished painting posted hopes ya diggs I had alota fun with this project and learning to work smarter using a underpainting. Once that is figured out glazing colors over the underpainting is the next step!I thank Professor Rick Lovell fo r showing the class the grisalle technique. I've also been playing around w/ lighting in my recent work tryin to become braver with lighting effects and create a dramatic scene. I've been looking at some baroque artists and Howard Pyle(Father of American Illustration) as inspiration.Patience is key!! Alright jive turkey's got some errands to run b e z!

Final Project for the quarter using technique called grisalle a french painting method. You
develop an underpainting and glaze actual local colors over it. Its a WIP ill try to scan and post it before I head back to Miami on Thursday via Greyhound. O and here is the finished C. F . Payne mixed media approach. I enjoyed the method alot and will definitely revist this technique this is my 2nd attempt my first would be a book cover I previously did for the book A Stolen Life.

I've added the acryllic local colors and then layed matte medium/ water mixture to seal the board. Next I applied a wash of dark values with watercolor then using a damp brush I lifted

and brought out the tonal shapes. Now its time for the oil wash so I will post that later.

Ink and Watercolor assignment subject was flying machine like the Redbull Flug tag contests w/ our natural style of drawing. Mine is a organically powered flying machine...cough.
Next up is a tight pencil for my CF payne technique currently working on. The subject is actor or musician I am using Toby Maguire as my muse... awesome technique.

Man oh man I have not blogged in a while(3 weeks to be exact)but Im back w/ some new projects in progress and sketches from figure drawing. This quarter I am taking an Animal Anatomy for Creature design under the Sequential art Professor Sean Crystal. I must say I am learning a lot in this class filled w/ Graduate and Undergraduate talent. I learn something new almost everyday from these talented guys. We have been going to the zoo for three weeks now(post zoo sketches later) and studying animal construction from observation and referencing The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals an AWEsoME BOOK!! These are my shapes that I went through to get to my creature (I will post design and final rendering later).

communicate one of four words that my professor listed:network, colloboration, investment and the last word escapes me. The target audience are banks, annual reports, or stock exchanges.

Actually finished this 2 weeks ago but took while to scan very busy at SCAD! Decided to play more with the compliments to pop the foreground w/ the bears versus the background w/ the sunset and mountain range. Done using watercolors and colored pencil. Think I like the combination of the two mediums.

24 Hour Art Challenge

During the 24 hour Art Challenge at SCAD My initial goal was a set of 6-12 characters, but I woke up later than I wanted too so, I did 4 characters all together and one illustration piece. I worked on achieving a character each hour to push myself conceptually and just keep drawing. The Illustration took the longest because I was getting feedback from my peers and adjusting the foreshortened proportions. Overall I am happy with the result because I was able to do the characters with out reference and pull from my head. One thing I learned is that I need to go darker with my pencils ( as you can see)the line work is a little too light. The Illustration line work is complete but I still want to render the picture in Coral and PhotoShop!!

This Friday there is a 24 hour art challenge at SCAD and I'm planing on creating a whole world for this character and an additional 6-12 characters to live and surf. Interesting survey to see what type of "Daemon"( persona in the form of a animal) personality a person has, I took the survey twice and wasn't too surprised by the results, but maybe you will, so try it out. Based off the movie coming out on December 7th The Golden Compass the trailer left a sweet honey flavored residue in my mouth anticipating the release. As I grow more aware and interested of the concept art present in movies I inspired by the Golden Compass's concept artists imaginative solution to creating the world the characters reside.

An practie study I thought I would try after a friend of mine showed me the forum at conceptart.org where you render any object as realistically as possible then afterwards you makeup anything by drawing from the rendered object, a good practice. I got lazy and never came up with a concept because I was moving back in the dorms but I'll get to it.

My goal this summer was just to sit back and draw, just for the pure enjoyment of it. So, inbetween my busy schedule of being a student summer missionary I would sit and draw just any or whatever could come out of my head and try to put it on paper. It felt good just to cut loose and let ideas pour out of me because along with coming to terms with my faith I feel as though my own verve is being defined making me a more capable artist. I played alot with caricatures!

This is a two drawing series I had to do in my Life Drawing 2 class. I had to make up my own subject so I chose to use a recurring theme on losing innocence as you get older . I used different approaches for both but I also wanted to give a sense of ambiguity in them to leave the story up to the viewer.

Ahem... I did this awhile ago...like n da summer...I was practicin wit greyscale markers nd coloring them over n phtoshop...I like this better than the costume she had n the movie.

and I wind up going overboard. In this piece I'm trying to capitalize off the idea that the late Archie bunker was a t.v. sensation in his time. I decided to change his cape green for more contrast but I like the red as well....some feedback would be nice.
